Fort Walton Beach is located in the panhandle of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast between Destin and Pensacola in Okaloosa County. This fast growing coastal town has a lot to offer. Wonderful dining, unique boutique shopping, beautiful beaches, state parks, outdoor activities and historical buildings paint the streets of this lovely town. You will find the Indian Temple Mound Museum, Air Force Armament Museum, Emerald Coast Science Center, and much more. There are many family activities available including several festivals held throughout the year. Fort Walton is the hub of the area offering the amenities of a city, while keeping its hometown feel. The Northwest Florida Regional Airport allows for easy travel in and out of the area. Established neighborhoods and new developments, waterfront homes and condominiums, and apartment communities are all available in Fort Walton Beach and surrounding areas.
Founded in 1937, the City has a “small town” feel with the benefits of an urban community. The City is rich with Native American history dating back 14,000 years. The earliest permanent settlers began arriving not long after Florida became a territory in 1821. In early 1861 the Walton Guards established an encampment in the area, named Camp Walton after Colonel George Walton, the acting governor of Florida.
In 1868 John T. Brooks purchased 111 acres in what is now downtown Fort Walton Beach and the area Brooks Landing. The most significant factor in the City’s growth was the creation, and later expansion, of what is now Eglin Air Force Base in 1937.
Fort Walton Beach is a city in southern Okaloosa County. Its surrounding area is marked by the sugary sand beaches and blue-green waters of the Emerald Coast, with lots of water sports, fishing and family fun. In the charming little town of Fort Walton Beach you'll find a quaint downtown area with interesting shops and museums, full of fun and local history.
Fort Walton Beach has a very warm humid subtropical climate with an overall average high temperature of 78° and an average low of 54°. The weather is typically hot and very humid, from late May to mid-September. Fall months, from mid-September to early December, are generally warm and less humid. The winter months are very short and mild, from mid-December to late February and spring months are warm, from late February to late May.
